Warmachine Widow

Day 54: Don't expect your wife to like games if they are your mistress.

Today I received a tweet from a new reader that asked about how to encourage his wife to participate in playing games together.  The short answer is, it is not about wanting to play, but wanting your wife.

There is this uncomfortable moment when a beautiful woman enters the room and to your utter dismay your partner reacts in one of following two ways: they stare with longing, or obviously are trying with every part of their existence not to stare.  No matter your orientation or what stage in your relationship you want to hold someone’s gaze and imagination.  The masculine gaze should not and cannot be reduced to insecurity, but I use this example to illustrate that playing with your partner is never about getting them to do something—it is about keeping them in your sights.

My Nemesis Warmachine
For the last two years the proverbial other woman in the room has been the game Warmachine.  It is a tabletop miniature game that requires construction and painting of an army.  For my husband every spare moment has been spent listening to podcasts, reading books, and message boards.  But privateer press is not his only source of readings, he receives at least 20 texts a day from other players.  No place in my home is safe from his obsession and there is Warmachine in the bathroom, bar, garage, kitchen, car, and even in our bedroom.  My partner has taken road trips for his addiction to San Diego, Vegas, Pasadena, and Tehachapi.  The only role that Warmachine has had in my life over the last two years is as a time suck, that increases clutter, and is an expensive hobby.  I do not know enough about the game to determine my feelings towards it, all I know is that my husband chooses it over me, every time.

Just Do It: Play Games with your Wife

Playing LoTR card game with hubs
Last month my partner remarked that, “it would mean the world to him if I would try to play the game Warmachine.”  First off, he has never once asked me to play this game. I have four jobs, was finishing my doctorate, and recently re-committed to this whole blogging thing so I am pretty busy.  But my reply was simple, "if it meant so much you should have just set up a short game for us to play so I had a chance to try it."

That was last month and though he has verbalized again his hope that I will try it, he has still never initiated a game.

Gamer, Geek and Half Marathon Runner

Besides gaming, all things Buffy, and yoga: I also enjoy running.  My partner signed up to run a half marathon with me and then at the last moment thought he could not do it. I packed some icy hot, taped up his knees and dragged him to the run.  We stayed together the entire 13.1 miles and he crossed the finish line just like I knew he could.  Since he almost cried when he moved our garbage can to the curb last night due to soreness, I am thinking he will likely not adopt my hobby, but not because I did not make every attempt to share it with him.

Gamer Wife Tip: If you want your partner to play, don’t whine, beg, or guilt-trip: just keep setting up games until you find one that you both love.  A game that reminds you how much you love to be together and why you chose this person in the first place.

Quitting my Marriage and Picking Up a Controller

Day 1: The 100-Day Countdown Begins

The mere thought of being a wife is too exhausting to contemplate today…So I give up.  My marriage is broken and I have decided I do not want to fix it.  Instead, I am going to reset and try gaming with my partner to see if I still want to remain best friends.  I will blog to chronicle how it is going and let you know if I still like games or the guy I married.

Am I still a gamer?

After experiencing the Guantanamo level sleep deprivation of being a new parent, I could not fathom why I voluntarily neglected sleeping to play games.  Additionally, having small children has limited the M rated games I play over the last 7 years and I have almost completely abandoned the tawdry way I played them.  I loved to trash talk.  Last year, I completed my dissertation, a solitary process that only left me 10 minutes a day to beat a Yeti in PvZ.

My husband shifted game modes to table top miniatures and has spent a lot of time and money dedicated to Warmachine/ Hordes.  The November itch would always give way to a short-lived return to the digital but we did not play together.  Partially, because life got in the way, and the other part because my 5-year old is better at FPS play than me now and the hubs doesn’t have the patience for my terrible and awkward play (he needs to get over it now).

The last few years I have been a mother, teacher, wife but not an avid gamer.  My relationship to games was more proximity than participation.

100 Days

Unlike my previous 100 days these games will be table-top and digital.  We have a new PS4 and shelves filled with board games I haven’t gotten around to trying.  If anyone out there wants to witness my experiment, you are welcome to join in and bring a game along.  I will play co-op, solo side-by-side, with the kids, without the kids, and anything else I can think of.

I have been playing games with the guy I married on-and-off for 18 years.  The next roughly 3 months will determine if I will continue to do so for 18+ more.

Playing: Tales from the Borderlands (TftB)
System: PS4
Developer: Telltale

Reflection: TftB is amazing because we have been watching a story unfold without the bombardment of commercial breaks.  Its unsettling to make choices that feel right, or I interpret a certain way, and see the way they influence the game is not always what I intended.  After waking up at 4am to finalize my weeks lesson plans, the lack of dexterity required for this game was doable at 10pm.

When bad things happen some people think the only option is divorce. For better or worse I am going to try Diablo before divorce and I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Veronica Mars and Investing in Awesomeness

Yup, I am not ashamed to admit that I am a marshmallow.

I was incredibly depressed for about 10 seconds that the new Veronica Mars movie was not showing in Bakersfield.  The kickstarter campaign released the movie for digital purchase and my depression was quickly alleviated.  After nine years of anticipation I got to watch the new Veronica Mars movie on my iPad (legally).

Technology & Purchasing Power

Technology has completely altered purchasing power.  There is everything from alibaba to ebay that allow sellers across oceans to find just what they want.

Kickstarter is a great service for those of us with unique interests it allows us to help small businesses or  help artists make their way.   My family spends at least $500 a years supporting kick starter campaigns (probably more but I don’t want my husband to tell me the real number).  We give to video game charities such as ExtraLife.  We support small business that make niche supplies for tables top games such as Super Dungeon Explore:Forgotten King.

It’s a Small World After All

I was incredibly eager to support the Veronica Mars movie kickstarter but they met their goal so fast I couldn’t even give them my money.  Some people have complained the move is “more of the same.”  I didn’t want a movie inspired by the series I wanted a movie that continued the narrative, which it did. Even though the movie had a limited release in theatres it still sold an admirable quarter of a million tickets over the weekend and made it into the top 10 (as number 10).   This proves I am not the only person excited about the movies release.

Last month my husband travelled to Las Vegas for a WarMachine Tournament.  By coincidence he met, face-to-face, several of the vloggers, national champions of Warmachine but also some small business folks he has supported on kickstarter.  Though technology is one way to help support other like-minded individuals it is still fun to meet people in the flesh.  If the movie was showing in Bakersfield I would have bought a ticket and still purchased a digital copy.

Final Comments: Movie is Awesome and Don't be a Dirty Pirate

The Veronica Mars movie is good.  I love the fact that it actually explains technology and pokes fun at itself and refers to the Big Lebowski just enough.  Several comments that endeared me but are not limited to the mention of a “desperate kickstarter campaign,” and a student that sadly is “most likely to blog.”  Aside from including an awesome female protagonists making bad romantic decisions the movie is worth watching because it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

See this movie but make sure to pay for it!
